Stroke is common worldwide, and increased substantially between 1990–2019. The greatest rates of stroke burden are seen in low-income countries. In order to combat these increases, and halt the increases in the prevalence of stroke worldwide, effective primary prevention strategies are needed.1

Lacunar infarctions are small subcortical infarcts, <1.5 cm in diameter, within deep areas of the brain. Roughly 1 in 5 strokes are estimated to be lacunar strokes.
