Project title: Bipolar Disorder: From Poles to Pathways

Country: India

Anchoring institution: National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences

Dates running: 2026-2029

Status: Ongoing

Project description

Bipolar disorder is treatable, yet India still faces a large care gap, estimated to be around 70% in the National Mental Health Survey (2015–16). At the same time, specialist capacity remains limited (around 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people), and real-world treatment practices can vary from evidence-based recommendations.

This project will launch a nationwide training programme for psychiatry postgraduates and early-career psychiatrists, developing a comprehensive two-tier curriculum (basic / advanced) that can be adopted and adapted by psychiatry training institutes across the country. The aim is to strengthen early diagnosis and support more consistent, evidence-informed treatment nationwide.

To ensure quality and continuous improvement, each module will also include pre- and post-assessments, as well as participant feedback. Using this, the project will work to equip local faculty to sustain long-term improvements to the treatment of bipolar disorder in India.

About Neurotorium’s Clinical Education Grants

Neurotorium is offering Clinical Education Grants to support non-profit educational projects aimed at strengthening clinical competencies within the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through educational activities aimed at healthcare professionals.

Applicants can request up to 100,000 DKK (approximately $15,000 USD) per year for a duration of one to three years. The budget can only include direct costs. Projects must incorporate Neurotorium’s educational resources, be anchored within established non-commercial organizations (such as universities, hospitals, or NGOs), and demonstrate potential to positively impact clinical practice.
