Project title: Bridging the Gap: Neurology Training for Non-Specialists
Country: Malawi
Anchoring institution: Kamuzu University of Health Sciences
Dates running: 2026-2027
Status: Ongoing
Project description
In Malawi, with a population over 20 million people, there are only two neurologists. As such, conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease are often missed or treated too late.
This project trains 40-50 frontline doctors / clinicians to become neurology leads in their hospitals through a blended program: self-paced online learning and monthly live teaching, hands-on workshops in Blantyre (Malawi), and ongoing case conferences, as well as peer support groups to streamline referrals and share difficult cases.
Led by Dr. Yohane Gadama (Kamuzu University of Health Sciences) with mentorship from Prof. Deanna Saylor, the initiative aims to strengthen the diagnosis, management and referral pathways for patients, with the aim of improving care both in the short to medium-term, while also expanding the long-term capacity of neurological care in Malawi.
About Neurotorium’s Clinical Education Grants
Neurotorium is offering Clinical Education Grants to support non-profit educational projects aimed at strengthening clinical competencies within the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through educational activities aimed at healthcare professionals.
Applicants can request up to 100,000 DKK (approximately $15,000 USD) per year for a duration of one to three years. The budget can only include direct costs. Projects must incorporate Neurotorium’s educational resources, be anchored within established non-commercial organizations (such as universities, hospitals, or NGOs), and demonstrate potential to positively impact clinical practice.
