Project title: Developing Mental Healthcare Capacity in The Gambia Through Professional Education

Country: Netherlands (with implementation in The Gambia)

Anchoring institution: Stichting International Mental Health & Substance Use Support (IMHSUS)

Dates running: 2026-2029

Status: Ongoing

Project description

In The Gambia, mental health and substance use care is severely under-resourced, with most services concentrated at Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Department (EFSTH), which is frequently over capacity and lacks enough staff with formal mental health training.

This project, delivered by IMHSUS, a Netherlands-based non-profit working with the Gambian Ministry of Health, will provide practical, hands-on training for healthcare staff at regional, district and health-centre levels on mental health and substance use conditions, treatment and community-based interventions.

A key goal is sustainability: training a local cohort of trainers who can continue teaching new cohorts long after the project ends, strengthening care both in hospitals and in communities.

About Neurotorium’s Clinical Education Grants

Neurotorium is offering Clinical Education Grants to support non-profit educational projects aimed at strengthening clinical competencies within the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through educational activities aimed at healthcare professionals.

Applicants can request up to 100,000 DKK (approximately $15,000 USD) per year for a duration of one to three years. The budget can only include direct costs. Projects must incorporate Neurotorium’s educational resources, be anchored within established non-commercial organizations (such as universities, hospitals, or NGOs), and demonstrate potential to positively impact clinical practice.
