Project title: Doctors’ Workshop-based Learning in the Use of Medication for Child and Adolescent Mental Illnesses
Country: Uganda
Anchoring institution: Makerere University
Dates running: 2025-2028
Status: Ongoing
Project description
This project delivers an annual, 3-day, practical training workshop in Uganda to strengthen how clinicians use medication in child and adolescent mental health care.
Despite national guidelines, many young people still need to travel to referral hospitals in Kampala for assessment and treatment – and in settings where referral isn’t possible, medication may be underused, unsafe, or prescribed without clear indications.
The workshop will equip ~180 general doctors, psychiatrists, and paediatricians with applied skills in diagnosing and treating common child and adolescent mental health conditions, including safe and effective prescribing and the basics of psychosocial interventions as part of a combined treatment approach.
About Neurotorium’s Clinical Education Grants
Neurotorium is offering Clinical Education Grants to support non-profit educational projects aimed at strengthening clinical competencies within the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through educational activities aimed at healthcare professionals.
Applicants can request up to 100,000 DKK (approximately $15,000 USD) per year for a duration of one to three years. The budget can only include direct costs. Projects must incorporate Neurotorium’s educational resources, be anchored within established non-commercial organizations (such as universities, hospitals, or NGOs), and demonstrate potential to positively impact clinical practice.
