Project title: Importance of Early Detection and Intervention for Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder in Adolescents

Country: United Kingdom

Anchoring institution: King’s College London

Dates running: 2024-2026

Status: Complete

Project description

This project strengthens early detection and early intervention for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adolescents -conditions that often begin in the teenage years but are frequently missed until symptoms become more severe.

The initiative will train frontline clinicians (specifically GPs and paediatricians across 41 GP centres in Lambeth, London, UK), using Neurotorium’s slides and materials as the backbone of structured learning modules. The goal is to improve recognition of early warning signs, risk factors and progression, and to support timely referral and evidence-informed care.

Beyond training, the project aims to build a more proactive system by involving GP centres in ongoing research and using focus groups to adapt education and pathways to the real needs of adolescents, helping to support collaboration across healthcare, schools and families.

About Neurotorium’s Clinical Education Grants

Neurotorium is offering Clinical Education Grants to support non-profit educational projects aimed at strengthening clinical competencies within the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through educational activities aimed at healthcare professionals.

Applicants can request up to 100,000 DKK (approximately $15,000 USD) per year for a duration of one to three years. The budget can only include direct costs. Projects must incorporate Neurotorium’s educational resources, be anchored within established non-commercial organizations (such as universities, hospitals, or NGOs), and demonstrate potential to positively impact clinical practice.
