Stroke is a highly prevalent disease worldwide, and has a considerable burden on quality of life as measured by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).1,2 DALYs are calculated by summing the number of years lost due to premature mortality, and the number of years lived with a disability.3 The DALY therefore can be thought of as one lost year of full health.3
