There are several SSRIs, including citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and sertraline.1  Although their primary mechanism of action is the inhibition of serotonin reuptake by SERT they typically have some minor effects on other neurotransmitter systems.1 Due to their hepatic metabolism and inhibition of specific cytochrome P450 enzymes, there is a risk of drug-drug interactions with other psychotropics, including antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, opiates, and other drugs.1 Combination of an SSRI and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) is contraindicated due to the high risk of serotonin toxicity.1 Additionally, SSRIs are contraindicated in mania and should be used with caution in patients with bipolar disorder (particularly bipolar I disorder) as they can have a precipitating effect on mania.1
