Differential diagnosis is the distinguishing of a disorder from others presenting with similar signs and symptoms.2 It is important to distinguish a diagnosis of major depressive disorder from several other disorders with overlapping symptoms as outlined on the slide, including substance-induced depressive disorder, attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and adjustment disorder.1
