A systematic review, published in 2019, reviewed prospective and retrospective systematic recordings of visual aura symptoms.[Viana et al., 2019] From a total of 14 studies, a comprehensive list of different types of visual symptoms was created, as shown on the slide.[Viana et al., 2019] Going further than the catalogue of elementary visual symptoms of migraine aura, the systematic review also investigated the frequency of aura symptoms.[Viana et al., 2019] Some of the most common visual symptoms of migraine aura were zigzag lines (24–81%), scotomata (23–77%), foggy/blurred vision (25–54%), and flashes of bright light (16–38%).[Viana et al., 2019] The authors proposed that the next stage in their analysis would be to apply their symptom list to clinical studies of migraine with aura, and also in studies of people with other visual disturbances – thereby producing a consensus list of aura symptoms that are specific and sensitive for migraine with aura.[Viana et al., 2019]
