The DSM-5 replaced the DSM-IV-TR ‘mixed episode’ diagnosis with the ‘mixed features’ specifier that can be applied to a current manic, hypomanic, or depressive episode in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.1,2
Among individuals with a (hypo) manic/depressive episode, those with mixed features were more likely to experience, compared with those without mixed features:3
- Unemployment
- A history of suicide attempts
- Comorbid anxiety disorders
- A rapid cycling course
