The slide summarises the evidence that this systematic review and meta-analysis found for the use of valproate in the treatment of acute mania in bipolar disorder in adults.1 The role of valproate was slightly less clear in adolescent patients, partly because of low-quality evidence.1 More work is therefore needed in this patient group.1 Moreover, because valproate is known to be teratogenic in pregnancy, the use of valproate should be avoided in women of childbearing age, unless a pregnancy prevention programme is in place.1
