There are wide variations in the reported prevalence of migraine, due to differences in factors such as study methodology, age of participants, and geography.[Lipton & Bigal, 2005] The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study found that headaches were most burdensome in women aged 15–49 years, with migraine causing 20.3 million years lost to disease (YLDs) in 2016 – strikingly, 11.2% of all YLDs in this age group and sex.[GBD, 2018]
