The GBD study has quantified the burden of 371 diseases, including schizophrenia, across 204 countries and territories, using metrics such as ‘years lived with a disability’, ‘disability-adjusted life-years’, ‘years of life lost to premature mortality’, and ‘healthy life expectancy’, alongside prevalence and incidence.1,3

GBD estimates are partially based on incomplete data and statistical modelling, so they must be interpreted with caution; however, it remains the most comprehensive source available, providing useful insights.1,3

Abbreviation: GBD=Global Burden of Diseases
