Neurodevelopmental aberrations in schizophrenia are largely mediated by numerous common variants of small effect, alongside CNVs with larger effect sizes. These CNVs have also been associated with conditions such as autism, ADHD, and bipolar disorder, supporting the concept of the neurodevelopmental disorder continuum, in which schizophrenia is part of a group of related and overlapping syndromes that result in part from a combination of genetic and environmental effects on brain development.5,6,8
