The Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol, revised (CIWA-Ar) specifically assesses symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal.[1] Pharmacological treatment is not indicated for individuals with a Total score <10.[1] For scores of 10–20, clinical judgement should be used to determine whether pharmacological treatment should be given.[1]

The CIWA-Ar scale takes approximately 2 minutes to conduct and score.[1] The validity and reliability of the CIWA-Ar has been tested and confirmed.[1]
