The forebrain (prosencephalon) is divided into the telencephalon and diencephalon, while the hindbrain (rhombencephalon) is divided into the metencephalon and myelencephalon.

The mesencephalon is shown between the forebrain and hindbrain, contributing to the structure of the brainstem.
