In this video, Professor Dr. David Baldwin highlights the dual treatment approaches for anxiety disorders: pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. While both are effective, their combination varies by disorder. For panic disorder, combining drug and psychotherapy yields better results. In generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), the evidence does not support combination treatment over either modality alone. Clinically, a combination approach is often necessary due to lengthy waiting lists for psychotherapy, with medication typically initiated first, followed by psychotherapy once its effects are evident. Patients generally prefer a combination of both treatments over medication alone.
